Must-See Panels at San Diego Comic-Con International 2017

The 2017 San Diego Comic-Con International has officially kicked off. The anticipation for tidbits of new information from their favorite shows/movies is tangible among fans. Adding to this anticipation is Netflix joining Hollywood heavyweights like Marvel Studios at SDCC this year, and nostalgic throwbacks of classics like “DuckTales”, “Battlestar Galactica”, or “Stargate”.

The following are the must-see panels of the weekend:

THURSDAY:

  • Ghostbusters 101: A Ghostbusters Panel of Biblical Proportions

Ghostbusters co-creator Ivan Reitman and the IDW Ghostbusters brain trust of Erik Burnham, Dan Schoening, and Tom Waltz discuss the long-running, critically acclaimed, and fan-adored Ghostbusters franchise including everything from the classic original movies to the long-running comic book history at IDW Publishing . . . as well as future plans for major events from Ghost Corps that will add to the beloved brand’s canon, bringing the different Ghostbusters worlds together like never before! Be there…or be slimed!

  • DreamWorks Voltron: Legendary Defender, a Netflix Original Series

Zarkon has been defeated and Shiro is nowhere to be found. Without a pilot for the Black Lion or the ability to form Voltron, the team must quickly devise a plan, as the ascension of Prince Lotor pulls them into a perilous game of cat and mouse. Executive producer Joaquim Dos Santos, co-executive producer Lauren Montgomery, Bex Taylor-Klaus, and Tyler Labine debut the first episode of season 3 of the Netflix original series DreamWorks Voltron: Legendary Defender. All attendees will receive an SDCC-exclusive poster created by the Voltron crew.

  • Kingsman: The Golden Circle

The Kingsman and The Statesman are kicking off Comic-Con 2017. Taron EgertonColin FirthHalle BerryChanning TatumJeff Bridges and Pedro Pascal will be joined by screenwriter Jane Goldman and Kingsman co-creator and Comic-Con legend Dave Gibbons. The panel will be moderated by Jonathan Ross.

  • Rocko’s Modern Life: Return to Earth

A panel from Nickelodeon that is bound to have fans shouting, “Oh my!” and “SPUNKYYY!” Original show creator Joe Murray and Carlos Alazraqui (Rocko), Tom Kenny (Heffer), Mr. Lawrence (Filburt), Charlie Adler (Mr. Big Head and Mrs. Big Head), Cosmo Segurson (director), and moderator Marc Snetiker (Entertainment Weekly) will dive deep into the lore of the cartoon classic and reveal what to expect from Rocko’s return to the screen.

  • DC Universe Original Movies 10th Anniversary

Ten years. Thirty films. Five shorts. And innumerable fan-favorite moments. Warner Bros. Home Entertainment celebrates a decade of animated DC Entertainment-infused films with an exciting panel in conjunction with the release of the DC Universe Original Movies: 10th Anniversary Collection, a comprehensive box set of the films, shorts, dazzling new enhanced content, and a few exclusive collectible items, coming in fall 2017. Producers Bruce Timm (Superman: Doomsday, Batman: The Dark Knight Returns) and James Tucker (Justice League: War, Justice League Dark) and co-producers/screenwriters Alan Burnett (Batman: The Animated Series) and Jim Krieg(Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox) will lead a panel discussion that will include actors Kevin Conroy (Batman and Harley Quinn), Tara Strong (Batman: The Killing Joke), John DiMaggio (Batman: Under the Red Hood), Vanessa Marshall (Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths), Christopher Gorham (Covert Affairs, Ugly Betty, Justice League vs. Teen Titans), and some very special guests. Moderator Gary Miereanu will have some very exclusive gifts for the most intelligent, inquisitive fans.

  • “Battlestar Galactica” Reunion

A superfan’s dream come true! For the first time ever at San Diego Comic-Con, the cast and creators of the Emmy Award-winning Battlestar Galactica will come together for an exclusive Comic-Con reunion. They’ll provide insight into this critically acclaimed hit and look back on some of the show’s most hotly debated moments—the Pegasus arrival, New Caprica, the finale, and the truth about the Cylons. Join Ron Moore, David Eick, Tricia Helfer, Marcy McDonnell, Grace Park, Michael Trucco,and Aaron Douglas and relive your favorite series. Moderated by Maureen Ryan.

  • Netflix Films: “Bright” & “Death Note”

Netflix presents a special sneak peek at David Ayer’s new action-thriller film, Bright,set in an alternate present-day where humans, orcs, elves, and fairies have been coexisting since the beginning of time. Stars Will Smith, Joel Edgerton, Noomi Rapace, Lucy Fry, and Édgar Ramírez, and director David Ayer will debut exclusive footage from the film and answer audience questions. Attendees will also be treated to a first look at the new movie Death Note, based on the famous Japanese manga written by Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata. Cast and filmmakers from this edgy thriller will debut footage and share details of the project’s transition from fan-favorite graphic novel to film.

  • “Legion” screening and Q&A

Legion, based on the New Mutants Marvel Comics by Chris Claremont and Bill Sienkiewicz, is the story of David Haller (Dan Stevens), a troubled young man who grew up believing himself to be schizophrenic, only to discover he is something more than human. In fact, David could be the most powerful mutant who has ever lived. Along with a team of other extraordinarily gifted people at a facility called Summerland, David learns to accept his true self and defeat the Shadow King. Or so they all believe. Creator/executive producer/writer/director Noah Hawley is joined by fellow executive producers John Cameron, Lauren Shuler Donner, and Jeph Loeband series stars Dan Stevens, Rachel Keller, Aubrey Plaza, Jean Smart, Bill Irwin,Jeremie Harris, and Amber Midthunder for a conversation on what to look forward to from season 2 of Legion .

  • Through the Gate: Celebrating the “Stargate” Franchise

It’s been 20 years since Stargate SG-1 premiered and almost 25 years since viewers took the first interstellar trip to an ancient world with the original film.   • “Marvel’s Inhumans”

The Inhumans have landed in San Diego! Special guests of the highly anticipated Marvel’s Inhumans unveil an explosive panel moderated by executive producer Jeph Loeb. This event series will premiere a version of the first two episodes exclusively in IMAX theatres for a two-week window prior to the debut of the full series on ABC.

  • “Young Justice” Q&A

  • Cartoon Network: “Steven Universe”

  • AMC’s “The Walking Dead”

  • “Rick and Morty”

Executive producers and co-creators Dan Harmon (Community) and Justin Roiland(Adventure Time), writer/producer Ryan Ridley (Community), and voice talent Sarah Chalke (Scrubs), invite fans to an inside look at the highly anticipated third season of Rick and Morty, premiering this summer on Adult Swim.   • “Game of Thrones” panel and Q&A session

Based on the bestselling fantasy book series A Song of Ice and Fire by George R. R. Martin, HBO’s Emmy- and Golden Globe-winning series Game of Thrones began its seventh season on July 16. The series, executive produced and written by David Benioff and D. B. Weiss, is an epic story of treachery and nobility set on the continent of Westeros, where summers and winters can last years. Cast panelists include (in alphabetical order) Alfie Allen as Theon Greyjoy, Jacob Anderson as Grey Worm, John Bradley as Samwell Tarly, Gwendoline Christie as Brienne of Tarth, Liam Cunningham as Davos Seaworth, Nathalie Emmanuel as Missandei, Conleth Hill as Varys, Sophie Turner as Sansa Stark, and Isaac Hempstead Wright as Bran Stark.   • “Twin Peaks”: A Damn Good Panel

Hear from the cast and creators of one of the most influential TV series of all time. Many of the amazing series being made today owe a debt to a small town in the Pacific Northwest called “Twin Peaks.” To quote Entertainment Weekly, “Before there was Peak TV, there was Peaks TV.” And now, 25 years later, the story continues in the new SHOWTIME limited event series starring Kyle MacLachlan as FBI Special Agent Dale Cooper, who returns along with original cast members in their unforgettable roles.   • Disney XD’s “DuckTales”

Life is like a hurricane on the new DuckTales series for Disney XD.   • AMC’s “Preacher”

  • Warner Bros. Pictures Presentation

On Saturday, July 22, beginning at 11:30 a.m., Warner Bros. will light up Hall H with a presentation showcasing some of its eagerly awaited upcoming releases, with exclusive footage and revealing conversations, helmed by master of ceremonies Chris Hardwick. The lineup includes director Steven Spielberg’s Ready Player One,based on the hugely popular Ernest Cline novel, with stars Tye Sheridan, Olivia Cooke, Ben Mendelsohn, and T.J. Miller, author/co-screenwriter Cline, co-screenwriter Zak Penn, and Spielberg on the panel; the long-awaited Blade Runner 2049, Alcon Entertainment’s sequel to the cult classic, which takes us 30 more years into the future, with stars Ryan Gosling and Harrison Ford as well as Ana de Armas, Sylvia Hoeks, Robin Wright, Lennie James, and Mackenzie Davis, writers Hampton Fancher and Michael Green, and the film’s director, Denis Villeneuve; and the greatest superheroes of the DC universe, united for the first time on the big screen, with stars Ben Affleck, Gal Gadot, Jason Momoa, Ezra Miller and Ray Fisher talking all things Justice League, as well as an early look at director James Wan’s Aquaman.

  • Avatar: The Last Airbender: Legend and Legacy

Even though the story of Aang and Korra has ended, the fans keep the legacy alive. Moderated by Avatar_Mom, this panel showcases inspired fan artists and conversations with professionals from the series. Help Candice Canes (pottery artist), Cheryl Duong (artist), Paola Harris (artist), and Dante Basco (voice actor, Zuko) celebrate this amazing series and awesome community of fans. There will be a live comic reading, a cosplay contest, and a Q&A.

  • “Krypton” special video presentation and Q&A

Set two generations before the destruction of the legendary Man of Steel’s home planet, Krypton follows Superman’s grandfather (Cameron Cuffe of The Halcyon, Florence Foster Jenkins)-whose House of El was ostracized and shamed-as he fights to redeem his family’s honor and save his beloved world from chaos. Based on DC characters, Krypton is from Warner Horizon Scripted Television and is executive produced by David S. Goyer (Man of Steel, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, The Dark Knight trilogy) through his Phantom Four banner. Damian Kindler (Sleepy Hollow) will serve as executive producer and showrunner. Krypton, based on characters created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, published by DC, will debut in 2018 on SYFY.

  • “Star Trek: Discovery”
