The Big Bang Theory, also recognized as TV’s most watched and highest rated comedy, is launching a spinoff series focusing on the complicated man that is Dr. Sheldon Cooper. The answer to your next question is yes, Jim Parsons is signed on for it — honestly, who else could play this mad scientist?
A little more information about The Big Bang Theory for those of you who live under a rock, the show is currently airing its 10th season. Fans are concerned that this might be it’s last season, but nothing has been confirmed yet. The cast seems to hope it will continue, because although a number of milestones have been covered for each of the characters, there is still so much more development in each of them.
The show focuses on four nerdy scientists who are friends and all work on research at a nearby university. It explores the concept of what happens when hyper-intelligent roommates Sheldon and Leonard meet Penny, a free-spirited beauty moving in next door, and realize they know next to nothing about life outside of the lab. Rounding out the crew are the smarmy Wolowitz, who thinks he’s as sexy as he is brainy, and Koothrappali, who suffers from an inability to speak in the presence of a woman. (we seriously recommend you check out this show — it isn’t the highest rated comedy for nothing!!)
The spin-off CBS is undertaking is a prequel to the Big Bang Theory focussing on Sheldon in his teenage years. In a quote to Entertainment Tonight, Parsons said ““[The writers] have done, from the beginning, such a good job of building such a history and a layered nature to all these characters. It just seems like a really wasted opportunity if you don’t decide to explore the origin story with that. I mean, they’ve layered so many things in there over the past decade that is already there to be drawn from.”
He added, “I’m really excited about it, I think it will be very different than Big Bang, but in a good way.”
