Groundhog Day, Predicting Our Weather Since 1887

Today, February 2, (thank goodness January is FINALLY over) is Goundhog Day. This day doesn’t get a lot of love, because it isn’t an actual holiday — meaning no work or school off for any of us!

Groundhog day is based on folklore, and the belief that a groundhog’s behavior can predict our weather for the next year. If it is a sunny day, the groundhog will see his shadow and it will send him scurrying back into his burrow — this is a sign of six more weeks of winter. However, if it is a cloudy day meaning also a shadowless day, it is a sign of spring being near and encouraging the groundhog to stay above ground.

The official groundhog, one Punxsutawney Phil lives in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania and has been predicting our weather since 1887 — so he’s definitely an expert by now! Let us know, what weather prediction are you hoping for?
